My name is Geoff Farrugia (Geoff will do) and I live in Australia with my wife, grown up children, 5 grand children, 2 dogs and a lizard (bearded dragon) named Frank. I come from an education and training background, spending over 20 years in the Australian air force and another 11 in public service appointments related to online learning and workplace health and safety.
Funnily enough, the majority of my positions over that time failed to inspire or satisfy my driving need to help people. After realising this, (took over 20 years to take action-yep, slow learner!) I decided I needed some creative outlet to prevent me turning off my brain and just going through the motions.. I needed something that would get my creative juices flowing as I felt stifled and “institutionalised”. I was also sick and tired of seeing great talented people being passed over, neglected or abused.
It was during this time that I decided my mission would be to help good people in practical ways to get out of poor uncaring work environments. So I commenced by helping people to win jobs and shortly after became a career and motivation coach, specialising in matching people’s personality preferences with suitable career opportunities. In the beginning a lot of this time spent was more as a hobby, rather than a profession, but I forgot…
Life is short.
and mine changed dramatically in 2014.
By then I had spent 10 years in a public service career that was full of meetings, projects, paperwork and normally produced no outcomes. A massive waste of tax payer’s money.
At this time, I had been thinking about how so many people go through their lives trying to live up to their parents, bosses or partners standards, values and life choices. With the sad fact being that these actions deprive the world of a person’s own true individuality and the special gifts they can bring to the world which are closest to their heart.
I wanted to change this mindset by reaching out to help more people to understand their true worth and the value they bring to their loved one’s and the world they live in.
However, two things held me back.
First, I was uncertain if I could provide enough value to others, and second, I had little understanding of technology.
A 13 year old girl committed suicide in my home town because of a comment left on her Facebook page
A few days later, I found my friend dead on the hallway floor, knowing he had died, alone with his best gifts trapped inside him.
These tragic events combined with my passion to help others, triggered me to take action and become founder and creator of the Career in Balance website.
